Hair Question:

Question by Trisha:

Hi Jules!

Since coming into the salon with my greasy product built up hair I used that Davines clarifying shampoo you recommended, as well as the Love conditioner. My hair feels light and awesome, and I feel like I’m in a hair commercial with wavy, bouncy, soft hair. :o) I know, I know, it’s the opposite of the hair you like… Now, the question is… What shampoo do you recommend for regular use? Also, how often should I use the clarifying shampoo? I’m anxiously awaiting your reply. 🙂

Thanks!

Answer by Jules:

If you feel like the SOLU (Davines) did the trick and that all the old product build up is out of your hair, then there’s no need to use it again, But if you feel like its still abit sticky then use it again until you feel like the hair is normal then make the switch to your regular shampoo. If you don’t have one, then I would recommend either the LOVE shampoo or the NOUNOU, both are nice. SOLU can be used in the future once a week or once every two weeks or whenever you feel like there is a build up.

Davines – Defining Invisible Paste:

This product is one of my favorites right now and I constantly go back to it because of its reliability to give me a messier chunky texture in short to medium length hair. This is a soft creamy paste that is very easy to distribute throughout the hair, although I tend to put it more towards the ends of the hair and I leave out the roots (as it may make it look greasy) My method of application is to rub it into both hands and with the hair hanging forward or sideways away form the scalp, I grab a clump of hair and roll it into the ends.

Once the product is evenly distributed, I dry it with a dryer, either with or without a diffuser and slightly squeeze the hair to give the hair a messier look.

Metal Brushes

My own personal opinions on metal brushes are not very favorable, throughout my career, I have seen some of the damage that a metal brush can do to finer soft hair.

Granted, most Asian hair can handle almost anything, so the typical coarse Asian hair could handle the way the the brush heats up while it is styling the hair, but If you don’t have the heavy coarse hair then do yourself a favor and avoid it. As the metal heats up, it is too extreme for finer hair textures to handle especially on a regular basis, It can cause damage, snappage and split ends throughout the hair shaft.

Non Stripping Shampoos..

WEN – Cleansing Conditioners

This line of products was developed by Chaz Dean, who specializes in color in LA, he developed them without any harsh chemicals which normally leave the hair looking lifeless and limp.

I’m recommending this line as I had just posted an article about not shampooing hair and just using conditioner, this line of products are based on this whole idea.

I have tried this product and have found it to leave the hair with a great texture. I tried a couple of the different types, one being perfect and the other being a little on the heavy side. So the secret is to find the one most suitable for you. They even have a trial package of all of the different types which is great so you can try them all out before deciding.

Jolie Lips…..

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with hair but my only excuse is.. it was found in a hair magazine and i found it so amusing that I had to share it with you all……

Oldie But Goodie

Roux – Fanci-Full:

My big surprise favorite product of the moment is the Roux -Fancifull Color Mousse.

For those of you who have been around awhile, this was the product that little old ladies used to use to give the blue, pink, purple rinses… punky grannies! It used to come in a hair setting lotion form and now comes in the form of a mousse.

I used it initially to tone my blonde streaky bits that turned too gold in the sun, but was so surprised to find this stuff actually gives the hair a great piecey texture and gives me quite abit of body too. Very easy to use becos you would towel dry, put some onto your hands and rub into the blonde parts and that’s it. Heres a pic of my hair the day after I slept on it.

For Curly or Wavy Hair

TIGI Catwalk – Curls Rock:

I found this product for Amplifying Curls to be pretty good . The consistency is soft enough that it is easy to spread throughout the head evenly, altho I would avoid putting it too close to the roots as it might cling it together too much. It definitely holds the curl well but may be too heavy on finer hair. The end result leaves the hair a little on the hard side until it is shaken loose, but the curls/waves are definitely more precise and pronounced.

Triple Barrel Curling Iron

Aghhhh! I’ve just been attacked by a curling iron!! A Triple Barrel one to be precise.

So, this is the crazy result of using the Hot Tools Pro curling iron!! I was curious about this one and how it would work, so I took the irons and with no products on my hair before or after, I went about and sloppily ironed medium sized sections throughout my head. What was crazy was that I felt no real effort was put into it on my behalf, there was no combing of the hair and sections and I didn’t hold the iron on each section for too long and within 25minutes I had a full mane of wild hair which looked like I slaved over it the night before by carefully braiding it to sleep on.I loved the look and went to sleep on it, the next day the waves were still there and they lasted me throughout the day at work. This picture was taken at the end of the day!! I would definitely recommend this iron just to have fun with, it works if you want to look as crazy as I do.

There’s no shortage of choice for the Triple Barrel Iron but here’s a few to check out: Hot Tools Pro, Chi Auto Digital Ceramic Waver, Conair Pro Triple Barrel Babyliss Pro, Revlon 3 Barrel.
