Oscars 2015

I wasn’t too inspired tonight with the hair to write a full post about the Academy Awards this year. So instead I pulled the top 4 of my hair favorites. Although I have to say that Lady Gaga’s segment brought tears to my eyes as did John Legend and Common’s.

Rosamund Pike with her undercut and updo combo. Haircut by Tina Haukjaer Anderson.

Rita Ora looking fabulous, much better than her 3seconds on Fifty Shades of Grey.

Emma Stone, it really doesn’t matter what her hairs like really cos she’s so cute and gorgeous no matter what.

Viola Davis with her natural curls, flying under the radar, but I spotted her cool hair!

Pics from Just Jared and back pic from Tina Haukjaer Anderson.

My Favorite ‘50 Shades of Grey’ Character ~

I, like everyone else went to watch 50 shades of Grey last night ~ on opening night. Yes I read all the books and absolutely hated them. Which meant that I was  pleasantly surprised that I did not vomit while watching this movie. I’m not here to add yet another review to the other thousands out there but I really wanted to draw attention to my favorite ‘character’ in the movie that caught my attention!

From the very beginning, Anastasia Steele’s fringe (bangs) had a life of its own, I couldn’t help but notice,  it went short, and then longer and back to short again, up and down, choppy to straight, full to split, all within the 90 miles she drove from home to Seattle.

Not that I didn’t like them, in fact we (as in me and my Dekko hairdresser mates who went) were convinced clients would now be coming in asking for the Anastasia fringe. Yikes – which part? Dakota Johnson’s hairdresser Mark Townsend will be happy his client is the talk of the town, although he didn’t actually cut the fringe for the movie, sorry I cant give credit to whoever did do it.

But anyway, it must’ve been really really tough for the continuity team, I know how hard it is to keep a choppy fringe the same every time you cut it, let alone for every scene! Anyway, just for fun, here’s what I mean…

And in my humble opinion, If I were a client and wanted this fringe, I would take this picture in to show the stylist..

Golden Globes 2015 Hair

‘Downton Abbey’ certainly comes to my  mind with this years Globes hair. I noticed there were a lot of waves going on, polished neat hair that shows the 20’s influence’s coming through.   I have to say when it comes to Finger Waving, no one does it better than those hairstylists who coif the hair and wigs on Downton.  To me, Hair dressing, especially finger waving is a special talent that less hairdressers are able to achieve. I am always amazed when I’m watching the hair on the show,‘kudos to those talented people.

With that in mind, here are some ‘Downton’ inspired looks that I loved. My top favorite is Jessica Chastain with her fabulous wavy one sided classic look. Others shown are Alison Williams,  Ruth Wilson, Zosia Mamet, Diane Kruger and Amy Adams, all with their classy wavy hair.

Other styles of hair that I admired from tonight that stood out for me are – Rosamund Pike with her perfect Vidal Sassoon Bob cut by Tina Haukjaer Anderson , Sienna Miller with her razored Bob, Helen Mirren with her classic short hairstyle, Emily Blunt with here braided hair ‘do’, Kelly Osborne with her purple hawk, and just because she’s cute Emma Stone with her messy bob. I chose these because they are not the usual ‘Award’ show hairdo’s so always lovely to see.

The Real Star of Gone Girl ~ Rosamund Pike’s Bob

The latest ‘IT’ girl is wearing the latest haircut! Lets look no further than Tina Haukjaer Anderson, she should know a thing or two about it ~ she created it!

Rosamund Pike’s undercut bob shape has been the buzz of Hollywood ever since that fantastic thriller ‘Gone Girl’ came out last month, based on the novel by Gillian Flynn.

I would say if Ben Affleck hadn’t gone all full frontal on us, he would’ve got his thunder stolen by Rosamund and her ‘Tina’ bob.

While watching the movie, you can’t help but admire the razor sharp bob that was on the big screen, every movement Rosamund made, the hair swung with her. Even during the dramatic gory scene, her hair looked perfect! So, it does not surprise me to find out that, that haircut was done by a fellow Sassooner, Tina Haukjaer Anderson.  Ah! of course, now it makes sense, Vidal Sassoon, ultimate master of bobs.

Tina works at Vidal Sassoon training School in Beverly Hills as Senior Creative Director. Her expertise was fully utilized when she was called upon to style all the hairstyles for her friend Rosamund Pike’s character Amy Dunne in the movie, including all the wigs.

Here’s abit of Tina’s insight about the hair (excerpt taken from Sassoon Academy)

– “The Gone Girl haircut is classic Sassoon technique with a modern spin,” explained Tina. “All textures can wear this cut – curly, fine, thick, wavy – as long as the cut is tailored and personalized.”
– “The director [David Fincher] requested a seductive bob, so I decided to accentuate Rosamund’s elegant neckline and jawline by keeping the bob short.”

Anyway for those of you who have seen the movie, you know exactly what I mean, and for those who have yet to see it – GO!! Its been a long, time since an actual haircut has made such an impact on women around the world, creating a frenzy of women wanting their hair cut off to the perfect bob. I applaud you Tina for bringing that classic look (with a twist) back to life.

Prediciting the future of color ~

Excerpt taken from Layeredonline.com  ~

‘Straighteners to dye for – we find out what science has in store for our hair

Word in the science lab is that we may soon be waving goodbye to messy DIY dye jobs in favour of a much cleaner way to colour our hair – simply with the swipe of a straightener. Scientists at the University of Mexico and Los Alamos National Labs are developing a state-of-the-art technique using ion beam straighteners – hot irons that can permanently switch the colour of your hair. How does it work? They’ve developed irons that can etch gratings onto individual hairs, creating different patterns so each follicle refracts light differently – by scanning the colour directly onto the hair fibres. Only issue is that it’s permanent. However, the scientists also aim to develop a conditioner that can mimic this effect, which can then be washed out. But before you rush out to buy, research is still in its early stages, and it won’t be making it into our salons any time soon. But good to know it’s not just our phones getting smarter.’

Individual Lashes..

I’m sure you’ve all tried this at least once by now, I wrote an article in the past about these lashes for an educational website but realized I didn’t share it with you on my blog, so here’s for you Blog readers…

I’ve been to quite afew different technicians to have this done and absolutely love them, as an Asian girl who is obsessed with having longer lashes, this treatment is the best. This particular set was done by Debbie from Lash Lab, SF.

This is where individual lashes are glued onto your own lashes to create drama, length and some thickness. Most will stay on for about 3 to 4weeks if care is taken with them, but in general the lash will stay onto your own lash until your lash naturally falls out during its cycle. Most clients will then go back for refills every 2 to 3 weeks, so yep, definitely a commitment both on time and money.

I must admit with Debbie’s applications I never did the re-fills, I would just do it for an occasion and keep them till they all fell out which for me sometimes would last about 2 months if I was being good.

Before and After pictures:

Screen Shot 2013-12-09 at 5.28.02 PM

You can see the dramatic difference it makes to the eyes.. make up can still be used but oil free make up must be used in order for the glue to last longer. The process takes between 1 to 3 hours depending on which look you have chosen, from natural look to diva look which is where  each lash will have a lash attached, it is up to the technician to give you the look you would like, mixing in different lengths and choosing the right curl for the shape of the eye.

Here are some pictures to show you how the process is done:

Screen Shot 2013-12-09 at 5.43.12 PM

Not a cheap treatment, prices can vary between $175 to $350 for the first application and for fills they can run between $65 to $90 depending on where you go. Of course, you can find cheaper ones like with all other treatments but you can run the risk of the glue affecting your own lashes.  Most people will want this to look abit more on the natural side, so unless you want something more dramatic and to go for the showgirl look, take some time to shop around and do a proper consultation. Anyway you’ve got the details, so now you must give it a go, you will LOVE it!

Dekko’s Photo Shoot

Its been quite some time since we updated our website photos and I have to admit, it shows! So we finally got our act together after 8 years and arranged for another shoot to brighten up our slide show on our site.

We asked our last photographer Rob (Robert Herrick)  if he would be interested in helping us out again and to our delight he was up for it. Since our last shoot Rob has become quite a’ hot shot’ photographer so we were honored when he said he enjoyed the last one so much that we could count him in again.

We asked all 10 of our stylists at Dekko to participate to help find models and to donate haircuts and color time, we decided to use as many clients as possible instead of going out hiring professional models which turned out to be the best idea because Dekko’s clients ROCK!  Most of the stylists/salon support team came together and we came up with 10 models to show some salon looks that clients could relate to.

Elaine (Elaine Fujii) the make up artist which we worked with did some fabulous looks with the help of Wendi our receptionist when the other make up artist dropped out. Considering she had so many models to do on her own, we want to give her a big shout out for being such a sport.

All in all, the day turned out to be a really enjoyable smooth shoot, one of the smoothest I’ve ever been on in fact, apart from the couple of unexpected snafu’s everything went as planned and I can honestly say the people who took part that day had a fab time, so a huge Thanks to the stylists who came and of course to Wendi, Sarah and Zoie, our salon support who were great and worked the 12 hour day without a moan or groan. (well maybe just one)

This turned out to be a day that showed how teamwork really should be, with everyone helping each other with the models and I must say I was very pleased with it all. Anyway, So I’d like to share some fun pictures of behind the scenes on the day and the prep time.Stay tuned for when the real pics will be revealed to all…
