Beauty & Style Tricks We Should Steal from Japanese Women

5574474569_a160aea6bd_b

Geisha (芸者 ?), Geiko/Geigi (芸妓) are traditional Japanese female entertainers who act as hostesses and whose skills include performing various arts such as classical music, dance, games and conversation, mainly to entertain male customers.

While the first association the uneducated have with the notion of geisha is a prostitute, truth is – these women were everything but. They were pioneers of high education, culture, sophistication and style. Geishas have become synonymous with good taste and fashion-forward pieces women everywhere tried to copy and imitate. Even today, Japanese women look up to their Geisha role-models while women in Europe and the US are trying to pick up and adopt Japanese beauty techniques and tricks that will not only help their skin be and stay nurtured but also help them cultivate and upgrade their fashion style. After all, Japanese women are known not only for their smooth and glowing skin, but for their unique intricacy, sensuality and superiority of expression, as well.
For all of you gorgeous women out there finding inspiration in Japanese style and beauty, we are giving you a few tricks to steal and model your hair, skin and diet regimen after.

Hair Care

Who wouldn’t be envious of the dark, full locks complementing a flawless white face! The hair quality of Japanese women is exceptional and everything to wish for. Apart from their regional genetics, Japanese women do have a few tricks up their sleeve that are helping them maintain their hair quality as it is – gorgeous, thick and shiny.
Unlike Western beauty regimens, Japanese ones are reduced to a rather minimalist approach; instead of treating their hair with multiple products, Japanese women are opting for gentle ones, devoid of sulfates or other harsh ingredients that dry and damage hair.
Japanese ladies use a mixture of seaweed powder and water and, prior to each wash, they treat their hair with Camellia oil. Never thought of that, did you now?
What’s also an important habit of the women of the Far East is that they almost never brush their hair. When they do (and this is commonly after they’ve washed it), they use a wooden comb to untangle their ends, and that’s it. Often times, these ladies don’t even own a brush!
Yet another trick is a balanced and healthy diet; it is an essential ingredient in helping them achieve the perfect hair volume and stamina. Along with the traditional foods such as fish, the Japanese consume a lot of fruits full of vitamins and minerals that are essential for healthy, luminous and glossy hair.

Skin Care

For women from the Land of the Rising Sun, skin care is so much more than that one product they put their trust in. Actually, cosmetic products they use are a side-benefit to their main ingredient – a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
To keep their skin free of blemishes, redness, irritation and scaring, Japanese women rarely ever eat meat or sugar and base their meals on cooked and/or grilled fish and veggies. Due to a healthy diet, their skin is glowing and rarely has any irregularities.
As for make-up, most women in Japan like their makeup kits on the shelves rather than on their skin. Usually, they are keeping make-up routines as simple as possible and are strong advocates of the thesis “less is more”.

Body care

Would you be surprised if, again, we were to tell you their slim and slender built is due to their diet and lifestyle? Sure you wouldn’t. Obviously, their collective obsessiveness with corsets and body shapers that are giving them curves they genetically don’t have has some say in it, too – but it’s the diet for the most part.
When you think about it, magazines and fitness experts around the globe are just now promoting lifestyle rich in veggies, fish, cooked and grilled fish and lean meats, rice and soups. Sounds familiar? To the Japanese, yes – definitely. No wonder Japanese diet is one of the most beautifying in the world.
Japanese philosophy is all about what you put IN your body, rather than what you put on it – these gorgeous women (and men) load up on vitamin-packed “brassica” (vegetables much like broccoli), and of course, lots and lots of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Further, they detox regularly by drinking a lot of green tea daily which is proven to have a ton of anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant properties. In fact, they appreciate green tea so much that they use its concentrate to treat acne.
With these basic guideposts, it doesn’t seem that hard working on perfecting your look, don’t you think? As long as you are dedicated, that is.

Hair Care Before & After Swimming~ Guest Post by Amy Mia Goldsmith

Swimming is healthy, it liberates from stress and makes you feel like it’s only you and the water, and nothing else. Knowing how much time I spend swimming, most women ask me how I manage to keep my hair so healthy and smooth. I have been swimming since I was four and I have always enjoyed spending my time swimming. In time, I needed to come up with an effective way to keep my hair healthy and beautiful after swimming. After spending years experimenting with numerous products and techniques, I’ve finally found the ones that I really like and I want to share some tips with you. So instead of restraining yourself from jumping into the pool, check out these tips and get into that water.

Before swimming

What most women forget is that preparation for swimming is as important as aftercare. Some women dislike swimming because exposure to water and sun usually makes the hair brittle, dull and dry. I had the same problem until I tried out coconut and olive oil that nourishes and protects the hair, thus prevents it from drying and discoloring.

Another thing you should always keep in mind is that, when exposed to water, your hair acts like a huge sponge, it soaks up a lot of water. Believe it or not, this problem can be solved by a simple shower. So, all you need to do is to take a shower, wet your hair, and the clean water will prevent it from soaking up chlorine and other harmful chemicals.
Apart from applying olive or coconut oil to your hair, you also need to apply an effective conditioner or spray with a sunscreen that contains vitamins A, C and E. Believe me, I never leave home without one of those in my bag. While swimming, I make a break from time to time in order to apply a new protective layer to my hair.

Many women make the same mistake and avoid wearing swimming caps. What they don’t know is that these caps protect your skin and ears from numerous parasites that could cause terrible and painful inflammations, and they keep your hair healthy and untouched. When I was a child, I hated swimming caps, but my parents made me wear them. I must admit that, today, I’m very grateful they did so!

After swimming

Keeping your hair beautiful after frequent exposure to the sun and water can be really tricky. That’s why you need to use adequate products that will nourish your hair and make it stay perfectly moisturized. When buying a shampoo or a conditioner, I usually pay special attention to its labels. For example, there are amazing products specially designed for “swimmers’ hair”. I usually prefer products that have both an immediate and long-run effect on my hair. When it comes to brushes, I am very satisfied with the Cloud Nine paddle and dressing brush. These brushes proved to be great for taming my long hair without breaking or split ends, and I wouldn’t change them for any other brush.

Apart from buying hair care products, I’ve also come up with some amazing alternative ways, using ingredients from my kitchen cabinet. One of the most effective DIY products I’ve tried out is made out of a pack of honey, peeled and mashed avocado and an egg yolk. All you have to do is to apply the substance onto your scalp, wrap your hair in a warm towel and leave it for 15 minutes.

What I would also like to recommend to all women is to have their hair cut in the end of the swimming season. No matter how much you nourish it, after being exposed to the sun and numerous chemicals from the water, your hair will definitely be brittle and dry.

All in all, keeping your hair healthy and beautiful isn’t that complicated if you know how to do it properly. With these simple, yet effective tips for taking care of your hair before and after swimming, you will finally be able to enjoy swimming and sunshine and will not have to worry about your hair

Vitamins and Healthy Hair ~ Guest Post

The Vitamin way to healthy hair

Our hair, an essential part of our body also needs nourishment for growth and build. Sometimes, in the rush to take care of the body, we forget that our hair needs care too. Just like our body, it needs the right kind of diet, nutrients, products, etc. One of the most important nutrients for your hair is vitamin. Here’s a list of Vitamin C and others which are essential for healthy hair.

Vitamin C

This is the most vital vitamin that your hair needs. Your body uses vitamin C to make collagen which in turn is vital in enhancing growth of your hair. It also helps in breaking down iron which in turn is another component of hair. However, since your bodies cannot manufacture Vitamin C on its own, you must eat and drink foods which have a high amount of the vitamin. These would include citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, cantaloupes, spinach, etc. These have a high concentration of Vitamin C. Adults should ideally have between 75 to 90 mg o Vitamin C a day, as recommended by government standards.

Vitamin A

After Vitamin C, the next big vitamin on the list is Vitamin A. It also has a lot to contribute to the building and growth of hair. Firstly, it has antioxidants that help in conditioning and moisturising the sebum on your scalp. This vitamin also helps in fighting things like pollution which damage and weaken your hair. Taking Vitamin C will make your hair feel lighter and will give it better volume. Lastly, it helps in strengthening your hair quality so that breakage will be reduced.

You can increase your vitamin C intake through leafy green vegetables and some citrus fruits. You can even take pills. You can even buy affordable salon equipment like shampoos which are enriched with vitamin C.

Vitamin B Complex

Vitamin B complex means it contains a mixture of all the vitamin B groupings that are available. This would include B6, biotin and B12. This vitamin helps to reduce hair loss, a major cause for worry for everybody. Also, it slows down the process of graying, so less gray hair. Vitamin B enhances growth of hair, which is good news for all those looking to sport long hair. It also adds to the shine. Vitamin B complex capsules are available all over the market.

One added benefit of taking Vitamin B complex is the fact that you are also getting a healthy dose of folic acid. There are a few reasons why folic acid is important, especially for those with curly hair. It helps to sow down the graying process, thus leading to less gray hair. Secondly, it makes your hair thicker, since it enhances hair growth. Folic acid also helps to make your hair shinier than usual. One last important fact about folic acid is that it helps in adding moisture to your hair. This means less drying and less breakage. Folic acid can be found in wholegrain bread and cereals too.

Vitamin E

While Vitamin E is mostly known to help with soft skin, it also helps in enhancing blood circulation which in turn leads to a healthier scalp. A healthy scalp will mean softer hair. For those with curly hair, you will notice less frizz and more curl. The amount of split ends will reduce too as your hair becomes healthier. While you can buy professional affordable salon equipment like specialised shampoos with Vitamin E, eating nuts, spinach and tomatoes will also give you amounts of Vitamin E.

Downstairs Dip Dye by Emma McCarthy…

Nikki found this funny article in the London Evening Standard that I thought I should share with you…Written by Emma McCarthy.

‘London is no stranger to a dip-dye. Ever since Bleach first opened its doors in east London, Dalston’s natural exhibitionists have been handing over their barnets in exchange for the salon’s full rainbow-hued treatment.

After two-and-a-half years of booming Technicolor trade, we thought we’d seen it all. But it appears that “seen” may be the operative word, because Bleach’s latest endeavour is to take its famous dyes south — and I don’t mean of the river.

Say hello to the Downstairs Dye — yes, Bleach’s famous dip-dye is now available for your nether regions.

“It’s all about matching your downstairs to your upstairs — and is really fun,” says Bleach founder Alex Brownsell. “It’s a more interesting way to accessorise your wax.”

Available at the salon’s newly opened haven for all things body hair, the Beauty and the Bleach grooming rooms will pretty up your private parts in any shade you wish for £40. But of course — for reasons I’m sure I don’t need to explain — the bleaching process has been approached with the utmost sensitivity.

“We’re extremely careful to mix the bleach in a certain way using the correct ingredients so as not to cause any irritation,” explains Chelsea Saunders, a specialist in advanced intimate treatments who was chosen to spearhead the new services. “We also apply a skin protector as a barrier so the bleach doesn’t touch the skin, and application time never exceeds 15 minutes. After bleaching, the colours we use are vegetable dyes, so are much more natural than the regular tints for the hair on your head.” As well as the matching collar and cuffs treatment, Saunders has also created a full menu of creative waxing services alongside eyebrow and eyelash tinting.

Just like its more public predecessor, downstairs dyeing is already proving extremely popular. Ahead of her wedding this year, 27-year-old tattoo artist Holly had her heart-shaped pubic wax dyed blue for a quirky take on her “something new, something blue”, while east London hairstylist Nicole chose a pink-tinted heart just to “make [her] boyfriend laugh”.

“Simple shapes, like hearts, stars and triangles, are the most popular,” says Saunders, “while people seem to prefer hot pink and bold blue dyes. But I’ve also done rainbow dyes. Basically, anything you could have on your head can be done on pubic hair.” Her most outlandish request? “I’ve had clients ask for leopard print — which can be done, as long as there’s sufficient hair.” Wild.’

Hair Care Tips That Beat The Summer Heat ~ Guest Post by Marcela De Vivo

Hair Care Tips That Beat The Summer Heat

School’s out for summer! Despite our extreme love for the summer heat, our hair doesnít always share that affection. The chlorine, sun and saltwater that we tend to indulge in during the summer can really do a number on our hair. Fortunately, thereís plenty you can do to keep your mane shiny and happy this summer!

Slather on the SPF

Your skin is not the only thing that can get sunburnedóyour hair can too! Luckily, there are some UV protectant products out there. Leave-in conditioners work well as both a seal in moisture and protection your hair from the sun! They help to seal in moisture during the day; it can also aid afflictions like frizz and flyaways.

Heat protectant

Since you and your hair are going to be getting some serious rays, good heat protectant products and hair styling precautions can also be great in the summer time. They prevent your hair from getting damaged from both heat styling and from baking in the sun.

IXnay on the flat iron

Speaking of which, you should probably try to cut back on the amount of heat styling you do in the summeróafter all, with the sun youíre getting, your hair canít really stand to lose much more moisture. Instead, youíll want an undone casual look during those hot daysóitís all about those beachy waves, right? And if you donít actually live near the beach, a good texturizing spray will help you fake those effortless bohemian waves.

Deep Condition

As your hair gets dried out from all of the summer fun, itís important to add in extra moisture. Deep conditioning is a great way to do tható and there are a lot of great deep conditioners out there that will leave your hair shiny and bouncy.

Moisturize with shampoo

Itís also important to make sure your shampoo isnít stripping your hair. In less harsh seasons, it might be okay to use that volumizing shampoo; however, during the summer, itís best to use moisturizing shampooó it will help your hair retain its moisture and shine. The best products for African American hair are ideal for locking in moisture, regardless of the season or weather, as their use of natural oils is a great way of adding shine without added weight or greasiness.

Wet your hair before swimming

It may sound strange, but everyone agrees that getting into the pool with already-damp hair is a great way to protect from chlorine. Think of it this way: your hair is like a sponge, and if itís already saturated with water, less of the chlorine can harm the cuticle. For even more protection, saturate your hair with a leave-in conditioner and wear a stylish swim cap.

With these tips, you can enjoy your time poolside/beachside without worryingóyou CAN have your cake and eat it too!

When Choosing A Hairstyle ~ Guest Post by Rush Hair

Some of the things you need to consider when you change your hairstyle are:

Does it grow quickly?

If your hair grows back quickly, think about how often you are willing to visit the salon to get your hair trimmed up. Shorter styles grow out faster than longer styles, so if your hair has always grown quickly, you’ll be visiting Rush.co.uk more often to book appointments. Certain areas outgrow others too, so layering will merge together after a while.

Will it match your lifestyle?

How you live should impact your hair choices. For example, if you were planning on joining the army in the foreseeable future, it probably wouldn’t be wise to get an overly glamorous cut, because it’ll get in the way. You want one that’s easily kept off of your face. Or if you are in the habit of tying it up and out of the way, when you go to work, you probably shouldn’t get an above the shoulder cut.

Will it suit your facial features?

Whether a hairstyle will suit you or not, depends on your facial features. For example, people with square jaws don’t tend to suit bangs. If you have a rounded face, you won’t want a haircut that makes your face seem larger than it actually is. Those with an oval face suit feathered layering below the chin. Experiment a little with some image editing software before you book.

How much time are you willing to spend maintaining your hairstyle?

Certain hairstyles will only look good if you are determined to maintain it. So if you don’t think too much about how your hair is presented to the world on a daily basis, it’s not worth getting a high maintenance haircut. For example, a short cut like Miley Cyrus’s new hair, takes a fair amount of maintenance, getting it re-cut, and styling it every morning.
